Greetings,

October is the month of Halloween treats, ghosts and goblins. Carve up some smiling pumpkins and enjoy these October homeowner tips:

Give a natural effect to your seasonal decorating by using wreaths, vegetables and fruits. Some great ones to include are pumpkins and gourds of all colors, apples, pomegranates, dried figs and brilliantly colored fall leaves.

Before using your fireplace in the cooler weather, have it serviced and cleaned. Get the chimney inspected and cleaned if needed.

Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 4th through 10th and the theme this year is preventing fires in the kitchen. Here are some great safety and prevention tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

* Keep appliances serviced, clean and in good repair.
* Unplug electric appliances when not in use.
* Use caution when lighting the pilot light or burner on a gas stove.
* Don’t use metal in the microwave.
* Avoid overfilling pots or pans with oil or grease that could splatter.
* Stay in the kitchen or close to it when cooking food and be sure not to leave it unattended.
* Keep dish towels, potholders, and paper towels away from the stove.

Lastly, change the direction of your ceiling fans in order to make the heating in your home more efficient. Turn on the fan to see which direction it’s currently running in. Then turn it off and use the small button on the base of the fan (below the blades) to switch the direction. This will save costs if done at the beginning of the summer and winter months.

Happy home-ownering in October and beyond!
